When the current in a coil changes, the coil's own changing flux induces an opposing emf in itself — this is self-induction, quantified by the coefficient of self-inductance L.

Phenomenon: When current I flows through a coil, it produces a magnetic flux Φ\Phi linked with itself. If I changes with time, Φ\Phi changes too, and by Faraday's law an emf is induced IN THE SAME COIL, opposing the change (by Lenz's law). This is self-induction.

Deriving the formula: Since the flux linkage of the coil is directly proportional to the current flowing through it (for a fixed geometry/medium):

NΦ∝I  ⟹  NΦ=LIN\Phi \propto I \implies N\Phi = LI
