Depreciation depends on cost, useful life, scrap value and the method chosen.

Determinants of the amount of depreciation:

  1. Cost of the asset: the total acquisition cost - purchase price plus freight, installation and other charges incurred to bring the asset into working condition. A higher cost means higher depreciation.
  2. Estimated useful life: the number of years (or units) the asset is expected to be used. The cost (less scrap) is spread over this life, so a shorter life means higher annual depreciation.
  3. Estimated scrap (residual/salvage) value: the amount expected to be realised at the end of the useful life. Only cost minus scrap value is depreciated. …
