(1) Charge depreciation to the Asset A/c (asset shown at reduced value); (2) accumulate it in a Provision for Depreciation A/c (asset stays at cost).

Two methods of recording depreciation:

  1. When depreciation is charged to the Asset Account:

    Depreciation is credited directly to the asset, reducing its book value each year.

    Journal entries:

    1. Depreciation A/c Dr. To Asset A/c (depreciation for the year)
    2. Profit & Loss A/c Dr. To Depreciation A/c (depreciation transferred to P&L) The asset appears in the Balance Sheet at its written down value.
  2. When a Provision for Depreciation Account is maintained:

    The asset is kept at original cost and depreciation is accumulated in a separate provision account.

    Journal entries:
