Life insurance covers a person's life (assured sum, long-term, event certain, with savings); fire insurance covers property (indemnity, one-year, event uncertain, no savings).

Six differences between life insurance and fire insurance:

  • Subject matter: life insurance is taken on the life of a person; fire insurance is taken on property against loss by fire.
  • Nature of contract: life insurance is not purely a contract of indemnity (a fixed assured sum is paid); fire insurance is a contract of indemnity (only the actual loss is compensated).
  • Insurable interest: in life insurance, insurable interest must exist only at the time of taking the policy; in fire insurance, it must exist both at the time of the contract and at the time of the loss.
  • Duration: a life-insurance policy is usually for a long term (many years/whole life); a fire policy is usually for one year, renewable.
  • Certainty of event: in life insurance the event (death) is certain (only the timing is uncertain), so the claim is sure; in fire insurance the loss may or may not occur. …
