GST is a single, comprehensive, destination-based value-added indirect tax with input credit, a dual CGST/SGST structure, multiple slabs and an online system.

Features of the Goods and Services Tax (GST):

  • Comprehensive single tax: GST is one comprehensive indirect tax that has subsumed many earlier central and state indirect taxes (such as excise duty, service tax and VAT), creating 'one nation, one tax'.
  • Destination-based tax: GST is levied at the point of consumption (the destination state gets the revenue), not at the point of origin.
  • Value-added tax with input tax credit: tax is charged at each stage only on the value added, and input tax credit is allowed, which removes the cascading 'tax on tax' effect.
  • Dual structure: for intra-state supplies, both Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST) are levied; for inter-state supplies, Integrated GST (IGST) is levied.
