Trichomes are hair-like structures on the epidermal surface, chiefly on stems, that reduce water loss by transpiration and may also deter insects.

Trichomes are epidermal appendages typically found on the aerial parts of a plant, especially the stem. They can be:

  • Unicellular or multicellular,
  • Branched or unbranched,
  • Soft or stiff,
  • Sometimes secretory (glandular) or non-glandular.

Functions of trichomes:
