Trichomes are hair-like epidermal outgrowths, especially on stems, that help the plant conserve water and provide some protection.

The epidermis of a plant's aerial parts (stem, leaves) often bears specialised outgrowths called trichomes. On the stem, trichomes are usually multicellular and may be branched; they can be soft or stiff, and in many plants they secrete resinous or waxy substances from glandular cells at their tip or base.

Functionally, trichomes help the plant by:

  • Reducing the rate of water loss through transpiration (by trapping a layer of moist, still air close to the surface).
  • Reflecting excess sunlight in some species.
