Non-chordates are the invertebrate phyla that never develop a notochord, and typically have a solid ventral nerve cord instead of the chordates' dorsal hollow one.

Salient features of non-chordates:

  1. Notochord absent at all stages of life (this is the defining absence, in contrast to chordates).
  2. Nerve cord, where present, is solid and ventral (not dorsal and hollow as in chordates).
  3. Heart, where present, is usually dorsal and circulatory system is often open (except Annelida).
  4. No post-anal tail is formed.
