Whittaker (1969) proposed five kingdoms based primarily on cell structure (prokaryotic vs eukaryotic), body organisation (unicellular vs multicellular), and mode of nutrition (autotrophic, heterotrophic by absorption, or heterotrophic by ingestion) — a major improvement over the older two-kingdom system, though it still has real gaps.
The five kingdoms and their defining features:
- Monera — prokaryotic, unicellular organisms (bacteria, cyanobacteria); lack a defined nucleus and membrane-bound organelles; nutrition varies (autotrophic or heterotrophic). Example: E. coli.
- Protista — eukaryotic, mostly unicellular organisms; includes photosynthetic (e.g., diatoms), heterotrophic (e.g., Amoeba), and mixotrophic forms (e.g., Euglena).
- Fungi — eukaryotic, mostly multicellular, heterotrophic by absorption (saprophytic/parasitic); cell walls made of chitin; body typically organised as hyphae/mycelium. Example: Rhizopus.
- Plantae — eukaryotic, multicellular, autotrophic (photosynthetic), with cellulose cell walls. Example: mango tree.
- Animalia — eukaryotic, multicellular, heterotrophic by ingestion, lacking cell walls, generally capable of locomotion. Example: tiger.
Two limitations of the system:
- It does not have a proper place for viruses and viroids, which are acellular and don't fit any of the five kingdoms' defining criteria (cell structure, nutrition, etc.) — nor does it clearly account for symbiotic organisms like lichens (fungus + alga together).
- It groups all prokaryotes into a single kingdom, Monera, without recognising the fundamental evolutionary and biochemical divide between Archaea (extremophiles, distinct cell-wall chemistry) and true Bacteria (Eubacteria) — a distinction later formalised in the three-domain system. …
