The five kingdom system reflects real biological differences (cell type, body organisation, nutrition, phylogeny) that the older two kingdom system, based only on 'plant-like' vs 'animal-like', could not capture.

The two kingdom system (Linnaeus) classified all living organisms into just Kingdom Plantae and Kingdom Animalia, based mainly on whether an organism was stationary/photosynthetic (plant-like) or motile/ingestive (animal-like). This created several problems:

  1. No distinction between prokaryotes and eukaryotes: Bacteria (prokaryotic, no true nucleus) were clubbed together with true plants (eukaryotic) simply because they had a cell wall.
  2. No distinction between unicellular and multicellular organisms: Simple unicellular eukaryotes (e.g., Amoeba, Chlamydomonas) were grouped with complex multicellular plants or animals.
  3. Fungi wrongly placed with plants: Fungi, which have chitinous cell walls and absorptive (saprophytic) nutrition rather than photosynthesis, were classified as plants despite being fundamentally different in nutrition and cell wall chemistry.
  4. Nutrition not considered: The two kingdom system ignored mode of nutrition (autotrophic, heterotrophic-absorptive, heterotrophic-ingestive), an important biological criterion. …
