Primary metabolites are the universal, essential building blocks of metabolism; secondary metabolites are chemically diverse compounds with no direct growth role, produced only by particular species/groups.

Primary metabolites: compounds that have a clearly identifiable, direct function in the normal growth, development and reproduction of an organism.
