(a) Nucleosides vs Nucleotides:
- A nucleoside is formed by the linkage of a nitrogenous base to a pentose sugar only, with no phosphate group — e.g., adenosine (adenine + ribose).
- A nucleotide is formed when a phosphate group is additionally attached to the nucleoside (i.e., base + sugar + phosphate) — e.g., adenylic acid (AMP). Nucleotides are the monomeric building blocks of nucleic acids (DNA/RNA).
(b) Primary metabolites vs Secondary metabolites:
- Primary metabolites occur in all cells and perform identifiable, known functions in normal physiological processes such as growth, reproduction and development — e.g., amino acids, simple sugars, common fatty acids, nucleic acids, proteins.
- Secondary metabolites have no known direct role in the normal physiological processes of the producing organism, though many have important ecological or pharmacological significance — e.g., alkaloids, flavonoids, essential oils, antibiotics, pigments, rubber.
(c) Ligases vs Lyases: …
