Synapsis — the pairing of homologous chromosomes — occurs in zygotene, the second sub-stage of the (unusually long) Prophase I of meiosis I.

Prophase I of meiosis is divided into five sub-stages: leptotene, zygotene, pachytene, diplotene and diakinesis. In zygotene, homologous chromosomes (one maternal, one paternal, each already duplicated into two sister chromatids) begin to pair up point-by-point along their length — this pairing process is called synapsis, and the paired structure formed is a bivalent or tetrad (four chromatids).
