The synaptonemal complex breaks down at the diplotene sub-stage of meiotic prophase I.

Meiotic prophase I is divided into five sub-stages: leptotene, zygotene, pachytene, diplotene, and diakinesis. During zygotene, homologous chromosomes pair up (synapsis) and a proteinaceous synaptonemal complex forms between them, creating a bivalent/tetrad; crossing over between non-sister chromatids occurs during pachytene, while the synaptonemal complex is still present. At diplotene, the synaptonemal complex dissolves and the recombined homologous chromosomes of each bivalent start to separate from each other, though they remain connected at points called chiasmata (where crossing over occurred), producing the characteristic X-shaped configurations.
