Sarcolemma, sarcoplasm, and sarcoplasmic reticulum are three named parts of a single muscle fibre - its membrane, its cytoplasm, and its calcium store.

A skeletal muscle is built up from bundles called fascicles, and each fascicle contains many individual muscle fibres, which are the muscle cells themselves. The muscle fibre has its own special vocabulary for familiar cell parts:

  • The sarcolemma is the plasma membrane that bounds the surface of the fibre, enclosing everything inside it.
