Auxins mainly promote cell elongation and shoot apical dominance, but they also affect rooting, fruit/leaf drop, parthenocarpy, and can act as weedicides.

Auxins (first isolated from human urine but naturally occurring in plants as IAA — indole-3-acetic acid, mostly synthesised at the shoot apex) have several important functions:

  • Cell elongation: auxins promote elongation of cells in the coleoptile and shoot, forming the basis of phototropic and geotropic curvature (differential auxin distribution causes differential growth).
  • Apical dominance: auxin produced by the growing shoot apex/apical bud suppresses the growth of lateral (axillary) buds; removing the apical bud (as in pruning) releases this dominance, letting lateral buds grow.
  • Rooting: auxins promote initiation of root growth, and are used commercially to induce rooting in stem cuttings (e.g. in horticulture).
  • Prevention of abscission: auxins can prevent the premature dropping (abscission) of leaves and fruits.
  • Parthenocarpy: auxin application can induce the development of fruit without fertilisation, producing seedless fruit (e.g. seedless tomatoes). …
