Brown algae owe their colour to fucoxanthin (a xanthophyll) alongside chlorophyll a and c, and they store food as laminarin (a complex carbohydrate) and mannitol, not as starch.

Members of Phaeophyceae (brown algae), such as Ectocarpus, Laminaria, Sargassum and Fucus, are mostly marine and characteristically brownish in colour. Their pigment complement is:

  • Chlorophyll a and Chlorophyll c (they lack chlorophyll b).
  • Carotenoids.
  • Fucoxanthin, a brown xanthophyll pigment, which is present in the greatest amount and gives these algae their distinctive brown colour, masking the green of chlorophyll.
