Phaeophyceae (brown algae) cell walls consist of an inner cellulose layer with an outer coating of algin.

Phaeophyceae, the brown algae, are found mainly in marine habitats. Their cell wall is typically made up of cellulose on the inside and is covered on the outside by a gelatinous/mucilaginous layer of algin (algic acid, a polysaccharide), which gives the algae their characteristic slimy texture and is commercially extracted as alginate. Their photosynthetic pigments include chlorophyll a, c, carotenoids and the brown pigment fucoxanthin, and food is stored as complex carbohydrates like laminarin and mannitol.
