Taxonomy, as a term, covers the entire process by which biologists study the characteristics of organisms, group them based on those characteristics (classification), and assign each group a standardised scientific name (nomenclature). It relies on characterisation (identifying features), identification (matching an organism to a known group), classification (arranging into ranked categories), and nomenclature (naming according to agreed rules).
Linnaeus's major contributions:
- Binomial nomenclature — every species is given a two-part Latin name (Genus + species, e.g. Homo sapiens), a system so effective it remains the international standard today, formalised for plants and animals by later codes (ICBN/ICN and ICZN).
- Hierarchical classification — Linnaeus organised organisms into a nested system of ranks (Kingdom, Class, Order, Genus, Species in his original scheme, later expanded), grouping similar species into a genus, similar genera into a family, and so on — the same basic hierarchy taxonomists still build on. …
