Phylogenetic classification is based on evolutionary relationships among organisms.

Over time, different systems of biological classification have been used: artificial systems (based on a few easily observable, often superficial characters, e.g. habit or habitat), natural systems (based on natural affinities among organisms, considering overall similarities), and phylogenetic systems, the modern approach, which classifies organisms based on their evolutionary relationships — i.e. how closely related they are by descent from common ancestors, as inferred from morphological, fossil, and increasingly molecular/genetic evidence.
