A Lewis acid accepts an electron pair (e.g. BF₃); a Lewis base donates an electron pair (e.g. NH₃).

G. N. Lewis proposed a more general acid-base theory based on electron pairs rather than protons:

  • Lewis acid: a species that can accept a pair of electrons to form a new covalent (coordinate) bond. These are typically species with an incomplete octet or an empty orbital, e.g. BF3\text{BF}_3, AlCl3\text{AlCl}_3, H+\text{H}^+.
  • Lewis base: a species that can donate a pair of electrons. These have at least one lone pair available, e.g. NH3\text{NH}_3, H2O\text{H}_2\text{O}, OH−\text{OH}^-. …
