Arrhenius acids release H+H^+ ions in water; Arrhenius bases release OH−OH^- ions in water.

Arrhenius Acid: A substance that, when dissolved in water, dissociates (ionises) to increase the concentration of hydrogen ions, H+H^+ (more precisely, H3O+H_3O^+).

Example: HCl(aq)→H+(aq)+Cl−(aq)HCl(aq) \rightarrow H^+(aq) + Cl^-(aq) — hydrochloric acid is an Arrhenius acid because it releases H+H^+ ions in solution.

Arrhenius Base: A substance that, when dissolved in water, dissociates to increase the concentration of hydroxide ions, OH−OH^-.

Example: NaOH(aq)→Na+(aq)+OH−(aq)NaOH(aq) \rightarrow Na^+(aq) + OH^-(aq) — sodium hydroxide is an Arrhenius base because it releases OH−OH^- ions in solution.
