A geostationary satellite has an orbital period equal to Earth's rotation period (24 h), an equatorial, circular orbit, and the same sense of rotation as Earth — so it stays fixed above one point on Earth's surface. Used for communications.

Step 1 — Definition.

A geostationary satellite is an artificial satellite that orbits the Earth in the equatorial plane, in the same direction as the Earth's own rotation, with an orbital period exactly equal to Earth's rotational period (about 24 hours, more precisely one sidereal day ≈23h 56m\approx 23\text{h }56\text{m}). Because its angular velocity matches Earth's, it appears to hang motionless over a fixed point on the equator when viewed from the ground.

Step 2 — Orbital radius (context).

Using T2∝r3T^2 \propto r^3 (Kepler's third law) with T=24T = 24 h gives an orbital radius of about 42,00042{,}000 km from Earth's centre (roughly 36,00036{,}000 km above the surface).

Step 3 — One use. …
