Both orbital kinetic energy and total energy vary as 1/r1/r, but with opposite signs — so increasing the orbital radius makes KE smaller while making the (negative) total energy larger, i.e. closer to zero.

For a satellite of mass mm orbiting a planet of mass MM at radius rr, gravity supplies the centripetal force:

GMm/r2=mv2/r⇒v2=GM/rGMm/r^2 = mv^2/r \Rightarrow v^2 = GM/r

Kinetic Energy:

KE=(1/2)mv2=GMm/(2r)KE = (1/2)mv^2 = GMm/(2r)

This is positive, and decreases as rr increases (larger orbit → slower orbital speed → smaller KE).

Potential Energy: PE=−GMm/rPE = -GMm/r

Total Energy: …
