Pascal's Law is the basis for every hydraulic machine — a small force on a small piston can produce a much larger force on a larger piston, because pressure (not force) is what transmits equally through the fluid.

Pascal's Law: If gravity effects are ignored, the pressure applied at any point of an enclosed fluid at rest is transmitted equally and undiminished in all directions to every part of the fluid and to the walls of the containing vessel.

Mathematically, for two pistons of areas A1A_1 and A2A_2 connected through an enclosed fluid, the pressure is the same at both:

P=F1/A1=F2/A2P = F_1/A_1 = F_2/A_2

so a small force F1F_1 on the smaller piston produces a much larger force F2=F1(A2/A1)F_2 = F_1(A_2/A_1) on the larger piston.

Applications:

  1. Hydraulic lift — used in car service stations to lift heavy vehicles using a comparatively small applied force. …
