The two processes differ in heat exchange, governing equation, and speed/insulation — all three differences stem from whether the system stays in thermal contact with a reservoir.

Difference 1 — Heat exchange and temperature: In an isothermal process, temperature stays constant (ΔT=0\Delta T = 0) while heat is exchanged with the surroundings to keep it that way. In an adiabatic process, no heat is exchanged at all (Q = 0), so the temperature necessarily changes as the gas does work.

Difference 2 — Governing equation: An isothermal process obeys Boyle's law:

PV=constantPV = \text{constant}

while an adiabatic process obeys:

PVγ=constant,γ=Cp/CvPV^\gamma = \text{constant}, \quad \gamma = C_p/C_v

On a P-V diagram, the adiabatic curve is steeper than the isothermal curve at any point they cross.
