The two processes sit at opposite extremes of heat exchange — isothermal keeps temperature fixed by exchanging heat freely; adiabatic exchanges no heat at all, so temperature itself must change — and this difference shows up directly in their equations and P-V graphs.

Three key differences between adiabatic and isothermal processes:

  1. Heat exchange: In an isothermal process, heat IS exchanged with the surroundings (as much as needed to keep temperature constant), Q≠0Q \neq 0. In an adiabatic process, NO heat is exchanged with the surroundings at all, Q=0Q = 0.

  2. Governing equation: An isothermal process obeys Boyle's law: PV=constantPV = \text{constant} (temperature TT fixed). An adiabatic process obeys PVγ=constantPV^\gamma = \text{constant}, where γ=Cp/Cv>1\gamma = C_p/C_v > 1.
