Sacrificing ratio = Old - New (admission); Gaining ratio = New - Old (retirement/death).

Sacrificing Ratio: the ratio in which the old partners give up (sacrifice) a part of their profit share in favour of the incoming partner. Formula = Old share - New share. It is calculated at the time of admission (or on a change reducing a partner's share) and is used to distribute the goodwill premium brought by the new partner among the sacrificing partners.

Gaining Ratio: the ratio in which the continuing partners acquire (gain) the share of the outgoing partner. Formula = New share - Old share. It is calculated at the time of retirement or death and is used to charge the outgoing partner's share of goodwill to the gaining partners.
