TVC varies with output (zero at zero output); TFC is constant at all output levels.

Total Variable Cost (TVC): the total expenditure on variable factors of production, which changes directly with the level of output. It is zero when output is zero and increases as output increases. Examples: cost of raw materials, electricity/power, wages of casual labour, fuel.

Total Fixed Cost (TFC): the total expenditure on fixed factors, which remains the same whatever the level of output — it must be paid even when output is zero. Examples: rent of building, insurance premium, interest on fixed capital, salaries of permanent staff, licence fees.
