Ex-situ conservation protects species outside their natural habitat — via seed/gene banks, botanical/zoological gardens, and cryopreservation.

Ex-situ conservation means conserving components of biological diversity outside their natural habitats, in specially designed facilities. Three key techniques employing this principle:

  1. Seed banks / gene banks: Seeds of different plant (especially crop) varieties and wild relatives are collected and stored under controlled, low-temperature, low-humidity conditions for long durations, preserving genetic diversity that can later be used for breeding, research, or reintroduction, without needing to maintain living plants continuously.

  2. Botanical gardens, zoological parks, and wildlife safari parks: Endangered plant and animal species are grown/kept and bred in these dedicated, protected facilities outside their natural range, allowing scientific study, public education, and captive breeding programmes aimed at eventually reintroducing individuals back into the wild.
