Fertilisation, cleavage, morula and blastocyst formation, and finally implantation into the uterine lining, together take the zygote to the point of pregnancy.

After fertilisation occurs in the ampullary region of the fallopian tube, the zygote undergoes the following sequence of changes on its way to implantation:

  1. Cleavage — the zygote begins to divide mitotically (mitotic/cleavage divisions) as it moves through the fallopian tube towards the uterus, forming first a 2-celled embryo, then progressively 4, 8, 16-celled stages.
  2. Morula — continued cleavage divisions produce a solid ball of 8 to 16 cells called the morula, which continues to move towards the uterus.
  3. Blastocyst — as the morula continues to divide, it transforms into the blastocyst, a hollow, fluid-filled structure. The cells at this stage get arranged into an outer layer called the trophoblast (which will later form part of the placenta) and an inner group of cells attached to the trophoblast, called the inner cell mass, which will develop into the embryo proper. …
