Placenta = the connection between foetus and mother's uterus; it enables exchange of nutrients/gases/wastes and secretes pregnancy hormones.

Placenta: After implantation, finger-like projections called chorionic villi appear on the trophoblast and are surrounded by the uterine tissue and maternal blood. The chorionic villi and the uterine tissue together form a structural and functional unit between the developing foetus and the mother's body called the placenta. It is connected to the foetus through the umbilical cord.
