Heating a primary amine with CHCl3CHCl_3 + alcoholic KOH gives a foul-smelling isocyanide (carbylamine); this is a test for 1° amines. Secondary and tertiary amines do not respond.

When a primary amine (aliphatic R−NH2R-NH_2 or aromatic Ar−NH2Ar-NH_2) is heated with chloroform and alcoholic potassium hydroxide, an isocyanide (also called carbylamine) with an extremely offensive smell is formed:

R−NH2+CHCl3+3KOH→ΔR−N ⁣≡ ⁣C+3KCl+3H2OR-NH_2 + CHCl_3 + 3KOH \xrightarrow{\Delta} R-N\!\equiv\!C + 3KCl + 3H_2O
