Henry's Law (p = KH x, solubility of a gas in a liquid is proportional to its partial pressure) is applied in bottling carbonated beverages and in managing gas solubility in the blood of deep-sea divers and high-altitude climbers.

Henry's Law states that the partial pressure of a gas in vapour phase is proportional to the mole fraction of the gas dissolved in a liquid: p=KH xp = K_H\,x, where KHK_H is the Henry's law constant.

Applications:

  1. Carbonated (soft) drinks / soda bottling: Bottles are sealed under high CO2CO_2 pressure so that more CO2CO_2 dissolves in the drink (higher p⇒p \Rightarrow higher solubility). When the bottle is opened, the pressure drops, solubility falls, and dissolved CO2CO_2 escapes as fizz/bubbles. …
