Azeotropes are binary liquid mixtures with identical liquid- and vapour-phase composition at a particular composition, boiling at a constant temperature; ordinary distillation cannot separate them.

Solutions that show large positive or negative deviations from Raoult's law, at a specific composition, boil at a constant temperature and the vapour formed has exactly the same composition as the boiling liquid. Such mixtures are called azeotropes (or azeotropic mixtures) and behave, for distillation purposes, like a single pure substance — fractional distillation cannot separate the two components because no further change in composition occurs on vaporisation.

Two types:

  • Minimum boiling azeotrope — formed by solutions showing large positive deviation, e.g. ethanol–water (~95.4% ethanol by mass, boils at 351.15 K, lower than either pure component). …
