Einstein's photoelectric equation shows stopping potential rises linearly with frequency, with slope h/e, above a threshold frequency.

Einstein's photoelectric equation:

KEmax=hν−ϕ0KE_{max} = h\nu - \phi_0

where hνh\nu is the energy of the incident photon, and ϕ0\phi_0 is the work function of the cathode material (minimum energy needed to eject an electron).

The maximum kinetic energy of the photoelectrons equals the work done by the stopping potential V0V_0 needed to just stop them:

eV0=hν−ϕ0eV_0 = h\nu - \phi_0

V0=heν−ϕ0eV_0 = \frac{h}{e}\nu - \frac{\phi_0}{e}
