Einstein's photoelectric equation, eV0 = hν − φ0, is a straight-line equation in V0 vs ν, with slope h/e (same for every metal) and a metal-dependent intercept.

Einstein's photoelectric equation:

Kmax = hν − φ0

Since the stopping potential V0 is defined by eV0 = Kmax (the maximum kinetic energy just barely stopped by the retarding potential):

eV0 = hν − φ0

V0 = (h/e)ν − φ0/e

Graph: plotting V0 (y-axis) against ν (x-axis) gives a STRAIGHT LINE (draw: a straight line rising left-to-right, crossing the ν-axis at ν0 = φ0/h — below this frequency no photoelectrons are emitted at all, however weak V0 — and having a y-intercept at −φ0/e if extended).

  • Slope of the line = h/e — a universal constant, the SAME for every metal, since it depends only on Planck's constant and the electron's charge, not on the material. …
