Field lines are a visual tool: their direction shows E's direction, their density shows E's strength. For a negative point charge they point radially inward.

An electric field line is an imaginary curve drawn such that the tangent to it at any point gives the direction of the electric field at that point. The number of lines per unit cross-sectional area represents the field's magnitude — denser lines mean stronger field.
