EM waves are mutually perpendicular, oscillating E and B fields, perpendicular to the direction of propagation, that travel through vacuum at the speed of light.

What are electromagnetic waves? They are waves produced by oscillating (accelerating) electric charges, consisting of time-varying electric field E and magnetic field B that regenerate each other — a changing E produces a changing B (Ampere–Maxwell law) and a changing B produces a changing E (Faraday's law), so the disturbance propagates through space without requiring any material medium.

Nature of EM waves:

  • They are TRANSVERSE waves: the electric field, the magnetic field, and the direction of propagation are all mutually perpendicular to each other.
  • E and B oscillate in phase with each other.
  • They travel through vacuum with the speed of light, c = 1/√(μ0ε0) ≈ 3 × 10⁸ m/s. …
