EM waves are transverse waves of perpendicular, in-phase E⃗\vec E and B⃗\vec B fields propagating at cc; E0/B0=cE_0/B_0=c.

What are electromagnetic waves? Electromagnetic waves are waves in which electric and magnetic fields oscillate. Key features:

  • E⃗\vec E and B⃗\vec B are mutually perpendicular, and both are perpendicular to the direction of propagation — so EM waves are transverse.
  • The two fields oscillate in phase (reach maxima and zeros together).
  • They need no material medium and travel in vacuum with speed c=1μ0ε0=3×108c = \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{\mu_0\varepsilon_0}} = 3\times10^8 m/s.
  • The amplitudes are related by E0B0=c\dfrac{E_0}{B_0} = c.

Propagation diagram. For a wave travelling along the xx-axis: the electric field E⃗\vec E oscillates in the yy-direction with amplitude E0E_0, and the magnetic field B⃗\vec B oscillates in the zz-direction with amplitude B0B_0.
