Principal causes of the backwardness of the Indian economy at the time of independence:

  2. Ruin of handicrafts without industrialisation (de-industrialisation): British policy destroyed India's famous handicrafts and cottage industries by flooding the market with cheap machine-made goods, while modern industries were not developed to replace them, leaving the economy agrarian and throwing artisans out of work.
