Gas exchange at the tissue level is a simple diffusion process, with O2 moving from blood into tissues and CO2 moving from tissues into blood, driven by their respective partial pressure gradients.

After oxygen is loaded onto haemoglobin in the lungs, oxygenated blood is carried to body tissues. In the tissues, the partial pressure of O2 (pO2) is lower than in the blood (because tissue cells continuously consume oxygen in cellular respiration), while the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) is higher in the tissues than in the blood (because CO2 is continuously produced as a by-product of respiration).

Because of these partial pressure differences:

  • Oxygen diffuses out of the blood (high pO2, ~95 mm Hg) into the tissues (low pO2, ~40 mm Hg), where oxyhaemoglobin dissociates to release O2 for use in cellular respiration. …
