The rate of diffusion across the alveolar membrane is affected by: (1) the thickness of the membrane the gas must cross -- a thinner membrane (as in a healthy, single-cell-thick alveolar and capillary wall) allows faster diffusion, while thickening (as in some lung disorders) impairs it; (2) the total surface area available for exchange -- the many hundreds of millions of alveoli in healthy lungs provide a very large surface area, and any reduction (such as the alveolar-wall destruction seen in emphysema) reduces the rate; and (3) the steepness of the partial-pressure gradient of the particular gas between the alveolar air and the blood (or blood and tissue), together with that gas's own solubility in the moist alveolar lining, since a gas must first dissolve in this moisture before it can diffuse across.

[!ANSWER]

Thickness of the alveolar membrane, total surface area available, and the steepness of the partial-pressure gradient (together with gas solubility).
