Mitochondria release energy as ATP, lysosomes digest cell waste/material, chloroplasts carry out photosynthesis, and ribosomes synthesise proteins.

  1. Mitochondria: Often called the 'powerhouse of the cell', mitochondria are the site of aerobic respiration. They carry out the Krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation (electron transport chain), producing most of the cell's ATP.
  2. Lysosome: Lysosomes are membrane-bound sacs containing hydrolytic (digestive) enzymes capable of breaking down proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and nucleic acids. Their main function is intracellular digestion — breaking down worn-out cell organelles, food particles, and foreign material such as bacteria; they act as the cell's 'scavengers' and are sometimes called 'suicide bags' since they can also digest the cell itself.
  3. Chloroplast: A plastid found in plant cells that is the site of photosynthesis. It contains chlorophyll, which traps light energy and uses it to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose (food) and oxygen. …
