Protein/peptide hormones act via cell-surface receptors and generate intracellular second messengers such as cyclic AMP to relay their signal.

Protein hormones (e.g., insulin, glucagon, many pituitary hormones) are usually large, water-soluble molecules that cannot cross the target cell's plasma membrane. Instead, they bind to a specific receptor protein on the outer surface of the target cell membrane.
