Thin myofilaments of a striated muscle fibre are composed mainly of the protein actin.

A sarcomere, the functional unit of a myofibril, contains two types of protein filaments: thick filaments made of myosin, and thin filaments made mainly of actin (with troponin and tropomyosin regulating the actin-myosin interaction). During muscle contraction, myosin heads bind to actin and pull the thin filaments inward (the sliding filament theory), shortening the sarcomere.
