Actin (thin filament):
- Composed of two strands of globular F-actin monomers (polymerised G-actin) twisted around each other in a helix.
- Each thin filament also carries tropomyosin (a thread-like protein lying along the groove of the actin helix, blocking myosin-binding sites at rest) and troponin (a complex of three subunits attached at intervals along tropomyosin, which binds Ca²⁺ and shifts tropomyosin's position to expose the binding sites when the muscle is stimulated).
Myosin (thick filament):
- A large protein made of two heavy chains wound into a coiled-coil tail, and four light chains, with each heavy chain terminating in a globular head region.
- Each myosin molecule thus has a long tail (which bundles with other myosin tails to form the thick filament) and two globular heads, which project outward and can bind ATP, hydrolyse it (ATPase activity), and attach to actin to form cross-bridges. …
