What is muscle fatigue? It refers to a state in which a muscle, after being used continuously or very vigorously, is no longer able to contract even upon receiving a stimulus, or contracts with reduced strength/efficiency.
Why does it occur? During prolonged strenuous exercise, oxygen supply to the muscle cannot keep pace with the high energy (ATP) demand. The muscle then relies increasingly on anaerobic respiration (glycolysis followed by lactic acid fermentation) to supply ATP quickly. This anaerobic pathway:
- Breaks down glycogen reserves rapidly, depleting them.
- Produces lactic acid as a by-product, which accumulates in the muscle tissue. …
