C4 plants avoid photorespiration by concentrating CO2 around RuBisCO in bundle-sheath cells (Kranz anatomy) and by first fixing CO2 with PEP carboxylase, an enzyme unaffected by oxygen.

Photorespiration occurs when the enzyme RuBisCO, instead of fixing CO2 (its carboxylase function, the normal first step of the Calvin cycle), binds O2 instead (its oxygenase function), which wastes energy and releases CO2 without producing any usable sugar or ATP. This happens more readily when the O2:CO2 ratio around RuBisCO is high.

C4 plants (like maize and sugarcane) avoid this problem through two related adaptations:

  1. Kranz anatomy: Their leaves have a special structure in which vascular bundles are surrounded by large bundle sheath cells (containing chloroplasts and RuBisCO), which are in turn surrounded by mesophyll cells.
