ABA is termed the stress hormone because its levels rise sharply during unfavourable/stressful conditions and it triggers protective, growth-inhibitory responses that help the plant survive.

Abscisic acid (ABA) is generally considered a growth-inhibiting hormone that plays a key role in helping plants withstand various kinds of stress:

  • Under water-deficit (drought) conditions, ABA concentration rises rapidly in leaves, causing stomata to close (by promoting loss of turgor in guard cells), which reduces transpirational water loss — a critical protective response.
  • ABA also inhibits seed germination and promotes seed dormancy, helping seeds survive until conditions are favourable for growth.
